    I have the blackberry oregon thornless on my fence - the leaves are very pretty and would look lovely on a pergola but it does grow a bit madly here - if you have to pass by closely it might need to be pruned a lot.

    Personally I have a small pergola and planted 2 cordon apples and 2 cordon pears, one at each corner. It looks pretty good but it is only year one so far. I grew butternut squash and climbing courgettes up it as well this summer.

      Saw a documentary once on hydroponics...had a Mahoosive tomato plant that they grew in the fashion you're talking about, it was however indoors...
