  • Simple Apple Tree Survey - Please Vote

Roughly how big are the largest of the mature old apple trees within a couple of miles of where you live?

I have allowed multiple choice, in case someone wants to vote for more than one size for some reason.

    Thanks

Sadly no apple tree within miles of my house There is a nice plum tree though about 1/2 mile in some brambles. It's about 9ft if it's of any help.

I only know of 2 in someone's garden, 2 on the allotments, and 1 growing on the canal bank. None of them are very big, although I think the canal bank one would have been bigger in a less windy spot - it's noticeably bent in one direction. One of the allotment ones is the biggest at about 15 - 20 foot, the rest are 10ft at best.

        We have loads around here
One of my neighbours has 3, and along the road there is probably the oldest bramley I have ever seen!

There's an orchard about a mile away from us their trees must be 20 to 26ft tall.

We've got 2 Worcester Permain trees in our garden that we've had 20y they are 10ft tall.

Next door's mature Bramley is just a couple of metres from my Charles Ross Step-over (and only a few more from my Egremont Russet)

Neighbours round the corner had an Orchard, but not much of it is left now. The couple that are still there are around 3 - 4 metres in height.

If I had my way, more would be going in.

I've 2 in my garden that I've put at 26-33 feet but they could be taller - certainly beyond the reach of a 'normal' extending ladder for pruning!

Most of the old apple orchards families had years ago are gone. I see quite a lot of new trees though which is encouraging. Fruit trees in this area seem to do better on the lower and more sheltered levels. My 'success' to date has been limited to one or two very small fruits (if I'm lucky!) but my (lower) neighbours are having great success.

We've two that must be about 30ft, the third is a lot smaller but the same age, that's a Bramley, didn't put that in as you wanted the largest.

I've voted for mine (small, triple variety) and my neighbour's (bigger). Living where I do, a 2 mile radius would take me months to determine how big all the others are!

I put 6-8m but that might well be an underestimation. I live near a very old orchard and some of the trees there are pretty big.

Thought I was a bit between the devil etc.

The only cultivated one I know, apart from mine, which aren't very old, is about 4 metres but there are loads of crab apples. Then I realised that they are mostly about 4 metres as well. So no prob.

I'm very lucky living where I do surrounded by gardens with apple trees. I have four but there's dozens in adjoining gardens although I have no idea of variety. I reckon I could plant just about any type and there'd be something to pollinate it. On top of the domesticated ones there's quite a few crabs and a few escapees of indeterminate variety in hedgerows.
