newbie to raspberries

a friend has given me 14 bare rooted raspberriy canes i have dug a trench and filled it with good compost and manure and planted them to the depth where they were planted before my questions are 1.can i do anymore to improve the growth 2.has anyone any idea about growing them in warmer climates 3.do i need to stake them/protect them from wind/protect them from too much sun and 4 do i just leave them be or do they need pruning....i have looked on the net for advice but wanted your opinions too

What kind of rasps are they? If they are an autumn variety they will fruit on the growth they make this year. If they are a summer variety they will fruit on last year's growth. Rasps do quite well in dappled shade and the fruit may dry out in fierce sun, so you may need to shade - this could double up as protection from birds.
I have no idea about growing in a hot climate though!

The only thing I can add to Jeanied's post is, if you are not sure whether thay are summer or autumn, then do not prune yet until you find out. It won't hurt for their first year.

Have some of them in the back garden and get a very decent crop off them every year.
