  • Cherry Tree Help

    Hi,

I would really love a cherry tree on my plot but as acomplete newbee who only started last year and has barely got the hang of veg im lost!!

Can anyone recommend a dwarf tree i suppose - does it need be be able to self fertilise or do you need two? Also i have very clay soil - which im working hard on!! - but could i even keep it in a pot initally to stop it ending up swimming away like last years carrots!!

    Any advice would be welcome!!

It depends on what type of cherry you are after Krshna - dessert or cooking?
I know that morellos are supposed to be quite hardy, but it would depend on the rootstock largely as to how well it would develop in your soil.
F.B is probably the best person to advice on this.
Have you thought about another type of fruit tree, or are you set on cherry?

Unless you have some netting for the cherry, the birds will eat the lot.

Cherry tree = wild bird food.

....unless you're prepared to net it, or buy a dwarf and keep it in a fruit cage.

Aw, c'mon krshna, its easy to give up because there are obstacles.

We have a Stella cherry tree, which is selft fertile. We have had it for 15+ years, and have had good crops from it.

Yes, the blackbirds will beat you to the fruit if you give them half a chance, but with a bit of perseverance you can keep the bu**ers out, and should have a reasonable crop.

Give it a go, the results are worthwhile.

Have just put a stellar cherry into my plot so good to see the post above. I bought mine from a shop near Swindon (used to be Instore ? name now). It was 4.99 and they had loads of different types of fruit trees all the same price.
