  • Grapevine question?........

I am now the proud owner of a ramshackle 12' X8' wood framed greenhouse and I am exploring the possibility of a grape vine running along the ridge. I would plant it outside and feed it in through the end. All the greenhouses with grapevines at our alllotments seem to have come from cuttings from the same vine. I have tasted the grapes and although they have a single pip they are really nice tasting pinky coloured grapes which seem to fruit well.

I don't think I will have a problem cadging a cutting but wondered does it restrict what else you can grow in the greenhouse by shading the roof area?

    Not really Snadge,

My dad got hold of a 30ft dutch light greenhouse years ago & the guy who had that had two vines up the middle & all around the sides it was Peaches & Nectarines. He used to gro loads of tomatoes in there as well so I think that 1 in the end growing alog the ridge would give a bit of welcome shad in the summer.

No, used to have one and it wasn't a problem. And don't forget you can eat the leaves as well. Just blanch them in some boiling water to make them pliable and stuff with whatever you like and fold them into parcels or cigars. Then cook as required. Lovely stuffed with cheese and placed on BBQ til cheese hot and melting .

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

I have two in my tunnel Snadger, as Nick says, it is a blessing in hot weather as they really do help with shade and not to the detriment of the other crops.

As long as the vine as on the "right" side of the house, it will save you putting on shading during the summer. You do need to keep it pruned though, other your greenhouse will end up like "Day of the Triffids". I had no probs with a grapevine fed in from outside, also managed to grow toms, cucumbers, bedding plants and a cacti collection. Just be aware, when vines grow they grow ***** fast

The greenhouse runs roughly North/South, the door is at the North end. Where-abouts is the 'right' place to plant it? South end is best for me, but is it best for vine, as surely it will head towards sun?
