  • fruit tree placement

    Hi there,

    Just a quickie question really.

Are there any fruit trees that shouldnt be placed near each other? For example peaches next to pears or plums or something.

Walnuts are supposed to have a chemical in them which prevents other plants growing near them.
Plums away from seating - wasps!!

      D'ya know.....

Wasps prefer "Discovery" apples more than "Victoria" plums.

Puzzles me the reason why, but thats the way it is here.

Yes, some varieties of walnut release toxins from the roots that will kill many nearby plants.

But apples, pears, plums won't have any problems if planted near to each other.

I'm not sure about plums/peaches/almonds near to each other though. It has been found that almonds and peaches (stone-fruits I think? ) can cross-pollinate, but that the fruit flavours can be unpleasant when that happens.

This could be bad news for me. I've got a stone fruit family tree (peach/nectarine/apricot), which limits my options some what. Oh well, the proof of the peach, is in the eating..

I think that the problem is when the nut (almond) and the the fruit (peach/nectarine etc) cross with each other.
I don't think that fruit x fruit is a problem.

              That's good then.

Although, it's not quite so good news for my almond/plum tree, but we'll see...
