Strawberry plants needing sowing

I bought from Aldi 16 strawberry plants and want to get them planted, but dont want to plant them outside in the ground, so have considered planting them in troughs. I have shown some pics on here, to show the size of the trough, and also the size of the plant / root.

My question is, what spacing do these small plants need between planting, the packet says 45cm between each plant. Is that necessary?


I was hoping to plant maybe 2 plants per trough, is that possible, or will the plants over whelm the trough, some advice would be helpful.

I'm no expert, Stu, but the trough looks a bit small for two plants, though it might be okay for the first year. I bought strawberry plants last year and grew them in troughs, two plants to a 3ft trough and three to a 4ft trough. They did quite well for a first year strawb but I shall move them to fishboxes this year as they are now a bit crowded.

I think that you'll be OK.
The pots will also look better with two plants, rather than one.
In the height of summer, they may need daily watering.

I've taken to growing strawberries in barrels - the holes in the barrels are only several inches apart.
Growing in barrels or containers seems to have less slug or mould problems.

I would put at least two in that trough, maybe even 3. But thats just me :-)

grew a lot of strawbs last year in old wellies,one in top,one halfway down an one into cut above instep,had a great crop of perpetuals and they are still on wall now and looking green and healthy,they are screwed into fence panels at different heights,have had no problems with slugs etc.....
