  • OK I've done it again - can I have some brains to pick?

So, wandering around Wilko's (as you do ) I ended up accidently buying some fruit plants.

4 are in pots (looking happy though, with new growth) - 1 of blueberry, raspberry, red gooseberry and a current

Then one that is wrapped in black stuff and that's a green goosegog

So, what the hell do I do now? I'd planned for a fruit space on my allotment NEXT year, not this year ( @ self) but I just couldn't resist.

Now I know that blueberries prefer an ericacious (sp?) soil, so should I leave that in a pot? I also know they crop better if I can have 2 other varieties, but tbh I think I'll stick to one and get more next year rather than this.

But do I need more of the other plants?

Honestly, I never learn to take things slowly and step by step - maybe one of these days I will learn that lesson

thanking you all in advance x

Keep them in big pots until next year.
Or plant them somewhere now and then dig them out and plant in their final place next winter. They won't mind too much.

The blueberry likes ericaceous compost (slightly acidic). It is often advised to get more than one - but to be a suitable pollinator, it needs to be a completely different variety. For example, I have GoldtrauBe, Patriot and Darrow. Their flowering periods overlap, but only just. It would be very easy to end up with tw different blueberries that flower at different times.

But I don't often see any bees or other pollinating insects on my blueberries - and my blueberries only barely manage to flower together. But they still produce decent crops without much attention.
So as for how important pollination is, I'm not so sure.

So I could plant them in pots in my yard then plan the fruit bed properly and move next start of winter? Sounds sensible!
