      Dear Ms ****,

I would like to thank you very much for your continued patience, whilst I have dealt with your enquiry.

      I have been sent the answer to your question by the supplier, please find below;

The white Grape Bulgarian Grape called ‘Storgozia’ this variety is along the lines of Pinot Chardinay but bred to be more decease resistant and is self pollinating

A few fruit bush/tree general growing tips

Fruit trees and bushes can be grown anywhere even in your borders, in the veg plot and even in containers on the patio. Most fruit trees and plants likes a sunny, sheltered position in soil that remains moist but dose not get waterlogged, and is not too limey – slightly acidic to neutral (around pH6-7) is ideal.

If you have sandy soil or heavy clay, dig in lots of well rotted organic matter such as garden compost or blended farmyard manure before planting. This improves sandy soil’s ability to hold water and adds nutrients, it also opens up heavy soil so the roots can grow.

Fruit plants are extremely hardy and can tolerate a surprising amount of damage. Birds are the only pests looking to be the first to pick your crops. Protect your crops with fruit netting, but keep it taut so they don’t get caught up in the loose net. Choosing disease-resistant varieties to be sure a good crop.

The best time to buy and plant the bushes is when they are not growing, late autumn, the soil isn’t too cold: mid-October to mid-December and late February to early April, are best in most areas. NOW!!

You must get these plants into pots or back in the ground within a few hours of taking them plastic from the route system, and keep the roots moist at all times.

I hope this is helpful to you and I apologise for the time it has taken me, to find the correct variety for your plant.

      Regards

This is what I was told:

        Good Morning,

Re your enquiry regarding the variety of your plants purchased from your local Wilkinson Store.

Firstly please accept our apologies for that late response to your enquiry.

I now have the information that you require.

        Asparagus is the Tienlim Variety
        Blackberry is the Walso Variety
        Grapevine is the Uvaitalia Variety

I do hope that this helps

        Kind regards

        Karen Faram

I assume the Asparagus is Thielim???

You say its clogs were popped Mally. Was it already in the ground? It may just have been knocked back (totally). Don't compost it yet. Grapes do go totally dormant in winter and any new vine bought from companies like Wilko's should be kept under glass and then slowly hardened after the last frost. But they can be hardier than you think and it could still fight back if its roots are OK. My vines look like ex-grapes, deceased, defunct, extinct, no more etc.. But I shan't write them off until late May.
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

Thanks for that. I had the roots planted outside & the stem going through a hole in the GH. I have however taken it up & like you say, the roots look really healthy so I've potted it up & put it in a heated GH to see if it picks up.

Anyway BM - your vine is bred to be "decease" resistant, so if it does die get your money back.....

I bought a cranberry from them a little while ago, and on the instructions it doesnt even mention the fact that it needs acidic soil to grow (nor on the Blueberries or citrus fruits either)...

You are lucky there were any instructions at all northepaul. With these cut cost plants there is often no indication of anything. Many people who shop for this type of thing at Wilko's, Lidl, Morrison's etc. are rank amateurs who aren't even on a forum to ask somebody else and really they are not geared up for this type of wysiwyg plant. Having said that, if you do have an idea of what to do, or you know how to use Google, they can be brilliant value.

Hmm... I just bought two grape vines from there today labelled as 'Pinot noir'... Pinot noir has a number of sports though, I kind of hope I've got Pinot meunier instead as it's a bit more disease resistant and earlier ripening. If it is Pinot meunier it should have furry leaves. I guess we'll see, but with them labeling the vines I suppose they should know what they are this time, last time they may have been a number of varieties.
The rootstock looks strong, but the grafting looks very fresh and doesn't look too good. I guess we'll see how they do, they were 2 for 5 quid.
I've already got a Muller Thurgau and an "Aldi mystery vine" (I suspect it's either Ortega or Pinot noir, too young to tell).
Whenever I get a greenhouse I'll try seedless varieties such as Lakemont and Flame, outside is for seeded varieties.

I've also been researching lesser known varieties in eastern Europe, the problem is getting them here. Most are either Vinifera, Labruscas or even Soviet-era Amurensis crosses. I think a lot are just winter hardy though when summer ripening is the real issue in Britain. Some from Latvia would probably do alright here, but much of eastern Europe gets hotter summers than France and Germany where most of our varieties are from, so I'm not sure if many eastern European varieties would ripen here (apart from Baltic ones). I've found one supplier in eastern Europe, but they're asking a lot for shipping considering the plants are bare root.
