They are both pretty good at shrugging off a bit of attack like that! Just keep your eyes open for obvious caterpillars and encourage the birdies to do likewise!
I found that snails like to lurk around my bay as well - it may be worth checking.
My Bay was nibbled by vine weevils, are you growing it in a pot/tub?? If you are check the soil for little cream coloured grubs, if you find any stamp on them and change your compost in the pot/tub.
Do you think the damage is recent or could it have been done last year when the weather was warmer, Liza? The vine weevils don't start their weevilly tricks until it gets warmer. It wouldn't hurt to water on some weevil killer when the soil temperature is up a bit.

i woulld agree,vine weavils by the look of it,we had none here til new people moved in down road and brought a load of plants with them from the south..
