Should my raspberry leaves be this colour?

I bought some fruit canes from Aldi last year.

They were only small canes but I did get some fruit on them.

One of the canes has started to grow a few leaves but they are a green/purple colour, is this normal or does it mean I should add something to the compost? (It is in a 12" square planter).

Look pretty good to me 21again. Can't post a piccie of mine. Here in the frozen north they are still in bud. Sulphate of potashed them this a.m. though, I'm not pure organic.

So are the young leaves supposed to be this colour then?

Can't say that I remember what colour they were when the first grew leaves last year.

Those don't look like young leaves to me, 21again - they look like last year's which have been through the winter. Take a look at the buds - they are fine.

I think the leaves must be last year's. However, mine all fell off like they usually do. Just got buds showing at the moment. I would pick off the discoloured leaves and let the plants grow.

To be honest- I don't know- mine are all in bud still, but I'm pretty sure they're all green when they come through.
What variety is it? Maybe it's specific to that variety??
The left hand one looks like it's been chilled a bit around the leaf edges.

Are those this years leaves and not hanging on from last year?

Mine are still looking like sticks in the ground!

The leaves look just like the overwintered leaves on one of my roses - and that is a relative of the rasp as well! The reddish brown shows up when the chlorophyll shuts down for the winter. (You can tell I've been in a science lesson recently )

A 12" square pot isn't really conducive to growing rasps however. They don't have deep roots but they do like to spread them about.

I know it isn't very big but I have 4 canes, each in a 12" planter and other things to grow too so don't have much room to be honest.

We did get quite a bit of fruit off them last year when they were in smaller pots which I suppose wasn't bad for their first year. It doesn't matter if they don't produce masses as my husband is the only person who likes them!

Yes - there are many blackberries in my area that look like that, but when I used to grow raspberries, I don't ever recall them turning purplish.
Maybe the plants are blackberries.

You are right, I think it may be a blackberry plant.

I have just remembered that I had 4 raspberry canes, a gooseberry and a blackberry in the Aldi pack that I bought last year, however none of them were labelled.

I knew which was the gooseberry because of the thorns, the raspberrys all fruited within a few months but there was another that didn't. I am guessing that was the blackberry.

I had forgotten that I had a blackberry plant!

It's me age.
