RedCurrant bush newbie

Morning all!!

Yesterday I bought a Redcurrant plant from the local garden centre for the OH. It has 3 thin branches coming up from the base with a few buds on it. I have planted it in a large planter where it will stay for this year until I can get the garden finished.

I followed the planting instructions on the label but it says that I need to cut it back down so the branches are just 6" tall. This would mean cutting back beneath the new buds, is this right?

Any other info or advice would be appreciated. Will it produce fruits this year and would it be happier outdoors or in the greenhouse

Redcurrants are hardy, so definitely don't need to go in the greenhouse. In fact they're much happier in open ground. Cut them back, new buds will sprout. You won't get any fruit this year though.

Thankyou. Will it be ok outside even though snow is forcast up here next week?

Should be fine. Snow won't hurt it, and I don't think we're forecast prolonged frost (which might). If we do get a long spell of frost, then simply wrap the plant and pot with some fleece or bubblewrap.

Snow isn't as dangerous as frost: snow insulates a plant. Like a duvet.

When you site it, put the redcurrants in semi-shade: they don't like baking summer sun
