  • Grape Vine Update

    Hi All,

Just looking for an update from peeps around the country and their grapevines. Is your vine dormant or showing any signs of activity? Particularly concerned with my 4 year old vine which is not showing a bud yet. I know we've had a particularly long winter, and I am hoping it has not been killed off.

Mine are still dormant in a Glasgow greenhouse. Still plenty of time.

Mine are still dormant but they were not established and I think the harsh weather might have finished them off.

Mine are still dormant too and it's about this time of the year that I start to fret that I've killed them off. I've had them for 4 years now and they keep coming back so I shouldn't worry, they'll be off and running before you know it.

I brought some in last year which fruited - not entirely sure of their age ...2/3ys. They have been outside all winter as they were have meant to have been hardy but I am a tad worried about them. No signs of green at all

I have been trying to kill this one for two years, this photo is 2 years old but it grows madly every year. I always think its dead but we are into summer before the leaves appear. I have to crop it back twice in the summer or you have to fight your way through the arch.
            Its now 10 years old.

I have 3 in small pots, cuttings from last year that I did not rehome. I thought the weather would have killed them, they were outside all through the snow etc, but there are buds swelling already. The main vine is not showing signs of life, but I'm sure it will soon, it's amazing how quickly the other trees are moving down here.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Mine have buds. We have a rampant unkillable one too. It's trunk is thicker than my wrist and it is chopped back each year - must be closer to 20yrs old. Never has grapes though but I think it was grown from a seed if that makes a difference.

I was chatting to the lady who I brought my specimens from. She too was convinced that hadn't survived this winter but her husband checked the bottom stem area, gently scraping some bark away and saw a green stem. This is the test apparently. They run a very successful nursery business so I am sure they know what's what

My Dad has a 10-12 year old one in his Greenhouse - no signs of life as yet. Not worrying yet either.

I have 5 pot-grown vines outdoors, all different varieties. Buds are swelling on all of them, all to slightly varying degrees. One of them starting break out but no leaves yet. Here's a pic of the most advanced
