cherry tree in pot

I've bought a stella cherry tree on dwarf rootstock and I'm going to keep it in a container. The container I have is fairly big, probably about 4 times the volume of the one it came in.
My question is, is there any reason to plant it in a middle sized container for a few years, and then put it into the large, or can I go straight to the large?

I would plonk it straight in the largest container you have, Katherine. It will give the roots lots of room to grow then and the tree will be less likely to dry out (although you should still water it in dry spells.)

I always prefer to use the next size up mainly so that the roots don't become lost in the pot. It's always best to grade pots slowly, when your watering the more roots in the pot the less water you will waste which means you aren't under or over watering the plant so it will grow a bit faster.
