I have just been down to inspect my rhubarb as one had not yet put up any shoots. The second one (in the same bed about 50cm away) is growing like crazy. Had a furtle under the soil to see what was going on and discovered that the non-growing one had gone rotten under the soil. Any ideas what might have caused it? And more importantly how to avoid it when I put a new plant it?

    Cheers!!
If it ain't broke...fix it til it is!

It sounds like a drainage problem, but that desn't explain why your other clump is growing like the clappers!
I suggest planting a new crown in a different spot and incoporate a good dose of compost and a bit of gromore in the planting hole.
