I am thinking of growing a dessert gooseberry, does anyone have a favourite to recommend? My family aren't that keen but they have only really had Grandads really sour cooking ones
I like Hinnomaki Red that I have on my breakfast every day. This year I have started to grow Hinnomaki Yellow. If you need cooking gooseberries, you can take a few of the fruit off before they become ripe.
Last year I was eating the Hinnomaki Red straight from the bush.
I have a Pax red dessert gooseberry bush and a Invicta one, the Pax hasn't got many spines on it and the fruit are lovely and sweet, the invicta is ideal for jam's and gooseberry crumble because it doesn't go mushy when ya cook it.
Yellow Champagne is a lovely sweet earlyish variety - small and quite hairy but it's the taste of summer. They are prone to mildew though, so you have to keep them pruned right and located where they can get plenty of air.
I have just given it a real pruning before it comes into leaf in the hope of getting some regeneration and the tree not having to work as hard getting water and nutrients higher up. If this doesn't work I'll replace it next year with something else.
