  • Cutting back old fruit trees

I took over a half allotment last year which I am intending to enclose entirely in a fruit cage.

The allotment came with three or four trees (I think they are gages but nobody seems to know for sure) which have been allowed to grow quite tall. Can I cut them down to size? They are about 12' tall. The main trunks are about 7 - 8 feet, and the spurs run up another 4 - 5 feet. I am intending to limit the cage to about 8' tall and would like to keep the established trees if the fruit turns out to be any good.

    Rob
