  • My fig and a big yay for me!

Cos I knew sod all last year I left my little fig out over the winter and it got hit by the nasty weather and frost so didn't hold up much hope but I have moved it, re-potted and it is now flourishing and starting to leaf!!!!

Can you tell how chuffed I am

I leave mine out over winter, also lots of leaves forming and small figs below them.

Only had 5 figs from it last year, so I am hoping for more this year.

Mine's been outside since I bought it a few years back, very easy to take cuttings from though it is better to use air layering. I have given away four since I got it.

Just remember to take off any figs that haven't ripened by the end of the year.

YAY!! Give that grape a pat on the back, well done you.

Remember they love to be root bond that's when they produce most figs, I have 2 both in pots and last year I had 15 of the larger and 9 of the small, believe me there's nothing better than your own home grown figs straight of the tree

I kept mine in the conservatory over the winter and have been putting it outside during the day for the past two weeks. I am not sure if it is alive or not, there are no new leaves showing, its just a few twigs

how do I know if it has died? Am I expecting too much from it this early in the year?

            Thanks Helen

Scrape a small bit of bark of the branch. Green is good, brown is bad.

                Hi WTD,

How long did you have yours before it fruited?
                Cheers

It had 2 fruit on it when I bought it in 2008, last year 5 figs and I can already see 8 fruit buds this year.

The plant was only about 10 inches tall when I bought it in 2008. Now about 18 inches high. I cannot say that it has been a fast grower. It's in a 16 inch pot.

                    Thanks

                    Its green

Any idea when should I expect to see life? I bought it last year and it was 2yrs(I think). It grew a few figs last year, only one was fig size but it didn't ripen! I wasn't expecting anything really so that was a bonus.

If you can put it outside on a south facing wall or in a sunny spot you'll be surprised just how fast it will burst into bud, then leaf and maybe some little fig-lets you may not get them to be grown up figs but it'll be a start. Mine took around 5 years to start to produce proper figs. Photo of last years fig's...yummy

It's only been the last week that I have seen the trees break bud in my garden, I still have one apple tree that looks like the others did three weeks ago (dead, but it's not).

The old plum tree has started to flower, but is dropping it's pettals just as quick, making it look like it is snowing on the lawn.

Soft fruit have been doing very well for the last four weeks now, keeping the bees active.

Mine's bursting into leaf just now. I was given it by a friend last year. Her husband - whom I didn't know well - had raised some cuttings from his own fig. Sadly he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer last year and died earlier this year. It's lovely to think that people go on in our memories in different ways.
