My question is which variety of strawberries would you recommend?

I was thiinking of the everbearing varieties, possibly a combination of Aromel and Malling Opal

Don't just cut holes in the side, the soil from above each hole will try to fall down and out.
Drill a hole big enough to get either a manual padsaw or electric jigsaw into, then cut a smile that takes 3/4 of the circle, leaving the top 1/2 intact.
Then bend the isolated bit into the barrel, use a hot air gun to help warm the "hinge" for easier bending.
This way you get a sloping surface to put your plant in, rather than a cliff.

Seriously though, thank you for the advice as I was just going to bore 1" holes.
