PW, can I do that with a cherry. The one I saw on telly was, I think, a pear.

Cheers PW. That will keep it to a more manageable height. Mr EB will think I've finally lost it.

I'll have to tell him it's a maypole of something

So Mr EB wont think that you're going round the twist if you tell him you now have a maypole in the garden...?!

No because I'll simply tell him its early for Beltaine and his birthday!!

I doubt he'll believe me though. Worth a try.

WOW this is great news. I was just about to shell out for posts and wire to do espalier, this method is much cheaper and easier!

So I use normal garden string? and tie it to what? A Rod in the ground or the trunk?

Unfestooned the tip of the leaders are about 10ft, after festooning its about 7ft

I just used soft twine tied about the post rather than the trunk as its a young tree.

ok I am planting 2 apples a pear, plum and cherry this weekend. Should I leave them to establish before festooning?

Got any pictures of that too? (Well they say a picture paints a 1000 words!)

Is the tree a grafted one?

                        The effect of festooning

SBP, here is the festooned plum as it is today. Every branch is covered in blossom from tip to toe. It really seems to make a difference with the amount of blossom produced.

Looks good PW. Our plum hasn't shown any blossom yet, is yours an early one?

How long do you leave the poor ol' plum tied up like that btw?

Its a Victoria SBP, the Syston plums on our new plot have not a sign of blossom yet.

I fear the tree is trussed like that until it retains its shape, perhaps a few years poor thing.
