Having a quick look on the web, it does seem to be an ermine moth. So it doesn't seem to do that much harm, should I leave it?
Thanks for the info."Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"
Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

No, I removed the bit of branch and put it on a Hawthorn in the field behind my house."Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"

That's EXACTLY what I get on my apple, pear and cherry trees
They will chew your tree bare if you leave them.
They are tent caterpillars and very destructive.
I reluctantly have started to squish mine to get them under control."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

This is very confusing, it seems they could be lots of different things.
Brown tailed moth.
Small Ermine Moth
Tent caterpillar.
I'm not sure if I should have destroyed them now or not.
I'm off to search the rest of the tree now though!"Orinoco was a fat lazy Womble"

Hmm...had a quick Google- brown tailed moth caterpillars are brown and hairy, and the Ermine are cream and brown.
Yours look almost black and long and thin like mine!"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple
