Raspberries?

Hi, as I said in my intro post, I am very much a novice, so please forgive my ignorance in any ridiculous questions I may ask I have a feeling that sentence might be used quite a lot by me over the coming weeks!

I bought a raspberry plant from a local garden centre a week ago - its called Malling Delight, it has about 4-5 canes, with nothing on them, and a few green plants around the base of the canes.

At present, its in the pot I bought it, as I'm not really sure what or where I should put it

Can anyone tell me what to do with it, in the hope it'll produce something!

Did you buy just one plant or is it a potted up bundle of canes, tied together? I had a pot of rasps which had several canes in - just split them up (carefully so not to upset the new shoots which are where the rasps are going to come from!) and plant out about 18inches apart. I added fish, blood and bonemeal as a slow release fertiliser to the planting hole as well, mixed well into the soil in the hole. And watered well. A mulch will go on later to help the plant establish.

Aha - now I see - knock the plants out of the pot and I think you will find you have 5 raspberry plants as indicated by the canes in there. The green things are weeds which have taken up the soil in the top of the pot. I hope the rasps are ok underneath - can't see any sign of the canes sprouting yet which is a bit worrying. Make sure you keep the receipt - you may need to take them back if they don't grow soon.

AH right, thanks for your reply! It was only £5 so if nothing comes of it, then I'll put it down to experience!

You could always try the thumbnail test - scratch a tiny area of bark off the cane lower down with your thumbnail - it should be green just under the brown bark. If it is then the cane is still alive - and probably desperate to get planted!

Its a nice orangey colour - I guess that means its dead then!

Yes do plant them and they should send up new growth from around the base....good luck! Remember not to plant too deeply...raspberries like to be shallow planted.

so I need to separate the canes, are the roots likely to get damaged whilst I'm trying to separate them though

No, you'll find the roots will separate very easily once you get the whole lot out of the pot.
