  • Walnut tree in pots?

    Anyone tried it?

I've just found a self sowed walnut and I don't want it in the garden. I know it hasn't really got a chance, but I've stuck it in a pot anyway.

    Be interesting at the least.

I read an article a couple of years ago on growing a walnut in a container. I've had a look but can't find it anywhere. I'm sure it sounded feasable because I planted 2 in pots, not very old but so far they seem to be doing well.

I'll have another look and see if I can dig it up

Presumably they have dwarfing rootstocks for them now. I remember a walnut tree from my childhood and it was 40-50 feet high and about 4 feet diameter. That would need a big pot

Walnut trees are massive. It would be a bonsai! Dunno it it would ever fruit, restricted so severely.

I think I've decided <shush, don't tell anyone> to take a walk into the woods and plant it somewhere out there. My kids may be able to get walnuts when they are grown up. It's a nice thought anyway.

I think it is possible to buy walnuts on dwarfing rootstock but they still grow to a large tree.15 to 20 foot I think but then that is small to the normal 60 foot height of a full grown walnut tree.
