  • Apricot rootstock is sprouting

Hi all - my dwarf aprigold is growing well (does have a small case of leaf curl I think? - I keep picking the infected leaves off though) - but when I popped out earlier today, below the graft I can see 4 shoots sprouting off the rootstock? They're quite tall now, would like to know what they'd grow into, but will this be a drain on the aprigold graft?

Dwarf apricots are probably grafted onto Pixy rootstock, which originates from a plum.

If the sprouts are coming from below ground, they ought to be removed as soon as possible; dig down and rip them off - they may be able to be detatches with a few roots intact, if you want to plant them to see what happens.

If the sprouts are coming from the above ground part of the lower trunk, you could leave them - they won't do any harm until they crowd-out or interfere with the main part of the tree.........or you could pile damp sawdust/soil etc around them (keep it moist) and the sprouts will probably form their own roots in the late summer and can be cut off and transplanted during the winter (assuming that you want to try to grow Pixy plums or use the rootstock for further grafting).

But I have no idea of what kind of plums you'll get from a Pixy rootstock........
