  • peach leaf curl driving me bananas!

    Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone can recommend a fungicide to treat peach leaf curl and any ways to prevent future infections?

My tree has suffered for 3 years in a row and I'm going mad trying to find a solution. I have previously kept the tree in the garden under cover in winter and on the patio in summer. It's a potted tree so can be easily moved around. Please help....

My small tree got it really badly this year and I thought all the leaves would drop off.

My OH dusted it with Bordeaux powder and it's picked up a treat. I've pulled off the affected leaves and the new growth is really healthy.
The fruit is setting nicely too ( I thought they'd all drop off!)

Apparently you should spray it Autumn and Spring and try and keep it away from the rain.
Mine is growing against the house and under a tree- so that clearly didn't work!
Neat powder now should rescue it!

I sprayed all mine autumn , early and late spring with bordeaux, i still have the worst case ive ever seen on all my nectarine and peach trees, ive again taken affected leaves off and this time sprayed with captan about 2 weeks ago and it looks a bit more promising this time, wether its the use of captan or the time of year it seems less now

Ive never got much in the past, maybe a leaf here and there, 2 of the trees are fantasia nectarine that are aparently highly resistant to it, they have been as bad as all the other types

This isn't much help to you, but I didn't get around to putting my tree inside until January. I read the leaves are infected as they expand and unfold, so I kept it in until I had true leaves and the blossom had finished. I did get the bordeaux powder, but didn't use it in the end, as I thought it would be too late in the season anyway. I've got around 6 peaches, and it's only 4 years old from a stone. The parent tree however was a dwarf one which was killed by the severity of a peach leaf curl attack. I found the seedling growing the following summer in the garden, potted it up, and it's now about 4ft tall. I'm trying to limit it's size, and I'll see what the fruit turn out like. I was going to keep it anyway, but space is a premium, so it might need to go if it doesn't work out.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

My peach suffered badly and no amount of spray or powder seemed to have any effect and the tree was getting weaker each year. So December time it was moved into the greenhouse and so far has had a trouble free year. I moved it out this week but am hoping that it is now to late for peach leaf curl. It will definitely be going into the greenhouse each year from now on.

Can plums get a variation on a theme of peach curl?...I'm pretty sure one of my plums has something very, very similar- but smaller red blisters with the curl

Can't see any wildlife sucking at the leaves

Hi, i have a dwarf peach tree that i got from B&Q 2 years ago. It had one affected leaf and one peach on it when i bought it but i didnt know that it was infected. Last summer it had loads more affected leaves on it and it produced about 50 peaches. I let about 20 peaches grow to full size. I was amazed!
Anyway, i found out that it had the dreaded Peach Curl disease, got a spray and forgot to treat it. This year some of the branches look dead and it only has about 10 peaches and these are only growing where it has got normal leaves. I will treat it in the autumn but i dont know if it will survive as some of it looks dead

Oh, forgot to mention, my tree was in my greenhouse all winter but its been out since the blossom finished, did i bring it out too early?

You just cut off anything which doesn't survive

                    I did wonder that.

Will it re grow new branches? I say that because last year it was a lovely globe shape about the size of a beach ball and if i chop bits off it will look like its got a puncture.

I have sooo many questions about everything.

There's no rush- why not wait till next Spring and then dedide which bits are not viable?

I can see that one side more than the other looks like some of the branches are black looking and have nothing growing on them. I have resisted cutting it thinking it might sort itself out.

If you scratch the bark and it's green underneath- then that bit is still alive.

You could try gently bending the tip of each branch back- and if it easily snaps you'll be able to see that that bit is dead.
Personally I'd wait- but I have a tatty garden!!!

I have a number of apple trees that I have grown from pips, they are in their second year. Some are straight and some are twisted, would this be leaf curl? They are all still in 4" pots.
