too late for aubergine and water melon?

title says it all really. A kind slug decided to dine on my plants and has just left me with stems. As there are no leaves i am presuming they won't grow and have a feeling it is too late to start them again. I did a search and couldn't find an answer so i thought i would ask the experts.

Too late for aubergine from seed now, don't know about melons

If the stem is intact and you protect it from now on the aub should resprout new leaves from the joints. Not sure about melons as they seem a little more delicate.

just been out to put plastic bottles over the aubergines and the cucumbers have also been munched off in the night. I think i'll have to go to the garden center!
