  • Help with Raspberries

Hi folks, last autumn I planted a dozen Malling Minerva & a dozen Joan J raspberry canes. I cut the canes down to leave stumps of about 8" above soil level. To date I don't have a single new cane growing from underground. However the leaves on the stumps are full of healthy leaves & the Joan J has a few very small but developing berries on them. Can anybody advise me of whats gone wrong. To be honest I suspect I didn't cut them down short enough. I would value your comments along with any advice on how to rectify the problem.
    Many thanks

    raspberries

    Hi, a few points

    a) they are growing
    b) the joan j will bear early fruit on last years wood - but you should get some autumn fruit on new wood - It`s better to cut the autumn wood to about 1" in february .

The soil should not be too dry

also the soil needs to be acid -- add some azelea fertiliser

In my experience, raspberries get quite stressed (and quite a few die) when transplanted as "bare-root" plants.
Give them a year of good feeding and watering to get them established.
Once they're happy, they'll send out plenty of suckers, although some varieties seem to grow/establish faster and send out more suckers than others.
