  • Ants!!

    Rarrghhhhh!

First they were in my cherry tree and I hold them COMPLETELY responsible for chewing holes into cherries and leaving me with TWO undamaged ones for ripening!

And now... I saw one on my strawberry! And another one on another strawberry, they've started coming onto my fig tree! And I saw one in my blackcurrant bush !

    Not impressed.

I use "Ant Station" for my little critters.
I have one in the house and in the greenhouse. I used to have a really bad ant problem but the ant station really works. They seem to be widely available. I picked some up yesterday from the local garden centre.
Not sure how effective it will be outdoors but worth a try.
      Good luck

1 teaspoon of Borax, 2 teaspoons of icing sugar. Mix with water to form a syrup. place the syrup on various 'stations' ( slate, flat stones, wood etc.) near the ant activity. Wait 2 days.

Whilst weeding the rockery yesterday, I found a number of ants nests all with HUGE eggs in them - must be getting close to flying ant time. Eggs went on the bird feeder (will the birds eat them?) and I went to B & Q!

            Ants on Strawberries

I lose more Strawberries to ants than all other forms of predation, they mine them out and you think you have a nice looking plump stawberry and when you turn it around it's a hollow skin all eaten out by ants. Driving me mad, lost a good 8 to 10 just today. I net against birds but you can't easily keep ants out. The ones in hanging baskets seem to be the only ant free plants.

I reckon last year the ants got as many as I did. Other than growing them in raised up conatiners its hard to know what to do.
