Some Strawberry Info

I was reading a gardening magazine and can across a piece of advice that makes sence especiallly if you have just planted yours this year!

They say you should cut the runners off your strawberry plants as they take a lot of energy from the main plant. By cutting the runners off, it will help your main plants get well established in the first year.

I will get my "extra plants" via runners next year ... just have to a little patient now!!!

Always cut the runners off unless you want new plants, otherwise your strawb bed will become a tangled mess

I worked for several years at a local fruit farm. Every time they planted new fruit they cut the runners, but also interestingly removed the first year fruit as they started to form.
We would bed them up with straw around them to keep the greenage off the ground from sugs etc. It seems heart breaking but you will be rewarded with the best crop ever next year!

I also would suggest planting a few different variations else you will find you will have too many to eat in a weekend and then none.

Thanks Alastair, done exactly all of the above! Lets hope they survive this winter to give me nice bumper crops next year and more plants!

Last year I planted in 10 plants....took all the flowers off as the note that it came with suggested for the great big plants this year.....I mulched them, put weed cover over the mulch, watered them....and then all but 2 plants died over winter, and they have both died now too....so this year I've planted more and am just taking the fruits as they come
