  • Grape

I planted my first grape as soon as it arrived in the post back in May. A week later we had a hard frost. So far nothing has happened. The green shoot that was on it has gone.

Shall I dig it up? or shall I leave it? Anyone know.

I'd leave it, just to give it the opportunity of coming back when it's ready. But I'm no grape expert, I just give things a little time to do their thing, unless I'm in great need of the space. I have 1 grape at the lottie, planted just under 3 years ago, just cut it back in autumn and it seems to be happy to get on without much intervention.

I'd make a small cut (I said a small cut!) in it with a stanley knife to see whether the stem was still moist and possibly with a (living) greenish layer just under the bark.
Mail-order and bare-root plants sometimes have a messed-up first year because some companies store them in fridges that don't fully mimic the natural temperature changes of spring, so the plants get confused and can be very late to leaf-out.
