What makes strawberries mutate like this:

I've picked three like this off the same plant. Do strawberries just genetically mutate easily?
Didn't really fancy eating this one

This may be a viral infection or an insect which will cause you no harm whatsoever, I'd have no problem eating it.

deformed fruits are usually the result of poor polination. commercial strawberry growers who grow in tunnels often buy colonies of bumble bees which they release into their poly tunnels to assist with polination. They do this because mishapen fruits = unsaleable fruits = reduced income. I found this out whilst watching a tv programme last week. Your fruit should be safe to eat but may be a bit hard or seedy.

How about this for a mutated strawberry......
(despite the weird shape, the taste and texture was normal).

I reckon that most mutated strawberries are due to poor pollination, or an injury to the flower or fruit.

I've got a couple like that too, not sure why, but they went down just the same!

Another vote for poor pollination - normally when the weather gets a bit cold or rainy and stops the insects from getting out and about
