A common question and one which frustrated me in my early fruit-growing years, since I wanted to grow relatively unusual varieties on relatively unusual rootstocks, on a relatively poor soil.
In the end, I literally threw the textbooks out of the window, since many are so vague and inconsistent!
I recently decided to put together an Excel Spreadsheet, which takes into account the rootstock, the variety and the soil/growing conditions.
It is intended to be fairly easy to use and *appears* to be able to generate a *realistic* mature size for a bush-tree.
This is only suitable for estimating the mature size of apple trees/bushes and is not applicable to other fruits at present.
If successful, I may move on to other fruits, such as cherries, pears or plums.
If you are interested in this spreadsheet (especially if you can give feedback), send me a private message with your email address and I will forward a copy. Copies are password-protected (and the password will not be revealed) which is intended to prevent changes to critical calculations within the spreadsheet. Only the inputs for rootstock, variety and soil can be changed without the password.
The use of the spreadsheet is entirely at your own risk!
The spreadsheet will almost certainly be subject to some fine-tuning and revisions.
Currently it is version 4.
