Mine are growing great so whatever i have done has worked but i can never find anyone thats had any success growing them. I have only tried one variety F1 Emire for the last 2 years but i would love to know what other people grow.

They look great! I have only grown sugar baby water melons and this year have about 12 of them on my 2 plants but only cricket ball size as yet. I am going to try other variety of melon next year. Do you have any tried and tested tips? xxxx

Success could simply be down to the variety you plant. F1 Emire so far are good for me. I plant them into troughs with peat based compost. I added some manure into the compost about a week before i put the plants in. I did it this way as i wasnt sure if the manure would burn the plants. I have also added chicken pellets when i have remembered Tom food is probably all you need.

Just a thought...if you have too many melons per plant then maybe there is not enough food to grow them all. It sounds harsh but it may be worth removing up to half of them to give the rest a chance but dont do this on my say so lol.
My carport is like Kew Gardens. It has more ventilation than the greenhouse and more room to work in. It seems that you are doing everything right, i personally think you have too many but it will be interesting to see what anyone else has to offer.

Oh no!

Melons and cucs dont like the stress of being re planted. I try to keep the compost they are started in very similar to what they are planted out in. If you start them in bigger pots they can grow enough to be able to handle the transfer.
Also when they are planted into the final pot i always make sure that the new wet compost is about the same temp as the initial lot as shock might play a part, just try not to disturb the roots. I hope this helps, good luck


Just a thought, i didnt think grow bags would be deep enough for melons and it would be pretty difficlult to put canes in for support.

Lol, it does look a bit scary when you get asked that. I wasnt sure how much i was going to swear so i thought it safer to add the warning but i wish i hadnt now.

Ha ha, i just realised that the melons thing could have been something very different!!

The flowers do look beautiful up the fence and considering i only planter the clematis last year they have grown fantastically. I am going to get loads, well thats the plan, and cover my garden with them.

I've successfully grown sweetheart and water melons, this year I'm trying Honeydew, but these are from saved seed from a bought melon, and at present, seem to be only producing male flowers but I'll give them a little more time before they go on the compost.

'I am going to have to find some alternative ways of using cucumbers as i am going to have a lot. My neighbour says she is going to make wine from hers.....Watch this space for that one lol '

As I have the odd few cucumbers growing in my polytunnel I would be really interested in how she is going to do it. Please make sure you do keep us informed.
