  • Rowan Tree

I have searched but cannot find the definite answer to my question. Is there another tree (ie non edible) that could be mistaken for a rowan. My non gardening next door neighbour has a splendid specimen growing with lots of berries. I know she would let me have them if I asked but the OH says they might not be Rowan and I risk poisoning him/us!! I have looked online for picture and certainly the tree and leaves look very much like Rowan.
    Many thanks

Can you post some pictures of the berries/leaves and the whole tree? It would make identifying it easier.

Can you remember what the flowers looked like? They're quite like elderflowers at that point but the leaves are totally different. To be honest the rowan is one of the easiest to be sure about so as Roitelet says, post a piccie and somebody will be able to say for sure.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Thanks for the replies both of you. Unfortunately I am camera less at present but yes they definitely looked like elderflowers when they first came out as, at first, that's what I thought they were but the leave are very different. If there is nothing obviously similar and poisonous that springs to anyone's mind I might take a chance!!

Sanjo the rowan is pretty distinctive and I'm not sure I have anything to compare except the elder - and you can tell the berries apart easily

Thanks Jeanied that looks exactly like it. We are over at our daughters at present and have just come back from a walk and I showed the OH loads of them along the way. Made the mistake however, of reading a bit out to him from the internet last night re: the fact that they are poisonous when they are raw but cooked they are fine and now he says leave them for the birds since all the web sites say birds love them. Ah well, |I'll soon have him out foraging for the elderberries (which again he turned his nose up at last year but having tasted the jelly he can't get enough of the stuff!!)
Thanks again all for replies. Much appredciated.

I imagine it will take some years before you get any fruit but I posted a link (in the Top Tips forum) to get a free Rowan Tree from the Velvet Toilet rolls site.

I chose the Rowan but not for us but to help the birds.
