  • Can anyone identify this variety of pear tree, please?

    Hallo there,

I just moved into my current house in January and inherited an espaliered (I think that's the word!) pear tree growing in the garden against the neighbours' garage wall.

I have done absolutely nothing to this tree whatsoever apart from water it now and again, and it's produced wee pears that are rock hard and don't really look edible.

But then again, I know NOTHING about fruit trees! Absolutely nothing!

I'd love to find out what variety it is so then I could then investigate how to look after it properly, and maybe even prune it or something scary like that

If someone would be kind enough to look at my picture of it on Flickr here and identify it for me, I'd be ever so grateful!

    Thank you,
    Croila

When Conference self-pollinates, the fruits are often bent - and I can see quite a few abnormal shaped fruits.

Hmmmm ... There certainly are quite a few weird shaped pears there. And they're still bullet-hard and pretty wee, so I can't see them being edible somehow. The tree faces due east and I don't think it gets much sunlight either :-(

I'd take a few of the very small fruits off & leave the larger ones to 'fatten up' a bit. If you give the tree a feed as well it might help as if it's quite a small young tree it may be struggling to ripen all those tiny fruits.

My Conference pears are still undersized and are some weeks from being ripe. They are often picked late Sept-mid-Oct, so there's plenty of time.
If a tree is carrying a heavy crop, the fruits will be smaller as the tree just can't get enough water and nutrients to them.

Regarding the distorted fruits - that's normal when Conference pollinates itself or produces seedless fruits. Cross-pollination with a different variety will cure the problem of distorted fruits.
