  • Choosing Blueberry Variety/ies

I would like to grow some blueberries but do not know what is the best variety to choose, or whether I should have a couple of different ones. They will be in large fruit cage, and there is plenty of room, so I could have a few in there. Can anybody help with the best varieties for bumper crops and taste? I like to eat them as they are, so a nice sweet variety would be good. I live in Hampshire, Thanks.

    Blueberry: "Darrow".
It has very large fruits - so large that the birds can't pinch 'em.

I have a chandler and a duke....got over 1kg of fruit from the both, the Duke has really large fruit (which, as FB says, the blackbird left alone) and the Cahndler is more prolific but had to hang CDs above it to scare away birds.
I am considering getting acouple more...I got mine from the dorset blueberry company - maybe not the cheapest but the quality of the bushes and the care in packing them is superb & second to none!

Supposedly they will do better if you have more than one variety to help with pollination. Don't know whether this is true as this is my first year with them so I took the flowers off to help the plants establish better - painful as it was

I bought a bluecrop from Homebase & Goldtraube from B&Q 2 years ago.
Last year they both had a small crop of berries but this year the Bluecrop has grown considerably, I picked loads of sweet fat berries & the Autumn foliage is magnificent.
The Goldtraube plant is much smaller as were the amount & size of the fruit & the foliage is nondescript so will be looking for a variety to replace it with.
