  • Grafting onto wild plum

This is one for F.B. I guess.

Near here there's a clump of wild plums with numerous suckers growing from them. If dig one up with a good root system can I graft onto it from my mother's very elderly Victoria plum?

Also, should I plant the sucker and let it get established before attempting the graft?

You should be able to graft one of those suckers. On rare occasions, some varieties and some rootstocks don't get on well together.

On balance, I don't think that it'll matter much whether you grow the sucker for a further year before grafting, or whether you graft at the first opportunity.

Thanks for that. I've propagated from cuttings and layering but I fancy having a go at grafting.

Although if you plant the sucker now it should establish it self a bit by the time it is time to graft, good luck !
