  • Pruning Query

What you happen if you didn't prune berry bushes... couple I've got in mind are blackberry and autumn fruiting raspberries. Just had a thought that I would like to train my blackberry up and over a fence - eventually around a window, and perhaps some raspberries along an arched wall at the bottom of my garden (was going to throw them away, but thought I could put them along here)..

Reason I'm asking is you're supposed to cut the fruited wood/branch out aren't you, once fruiting has finished? If I wanted to train a couple of Raspberry canes -not sure of the correct terminology, but I guess similar to a step over apple - but two tiers high - running along a wall - I guess similar a grape vine can be trained. If I do this, and prune every year, won't I just have to keep tying them in again? Would this years wood bear fruit next year too, and perhaps I just prune at the appropriate time to tidy it up?

Probably me being lazy, but thought I'd ask anyway (to avoid having to train new canes each year).

If I cut off the blackberry branch (which is probably 8' odd now) - I'll have to train a new one up next year - which would never cover the fence like I'm after..

    TIA!

Yes, you'd have to train new canes in every year.

Thought that may be the case, thanks..

Does the old wood just die off then?
