  • Apple tree graft location

I've just received a Quinn apple tree on M26. It has the five grafts all onto the rootstock at between 250 and 300 mm from ground level.
Will the rootstock continue to grow higher so that the grafts are higher from the ground? Or will the branches always exit the trunk at 250 - 300 mm above ground level and only the tips of the branches grow higher?

I was planning to graft more varieties onto it over the coming years but am not sure now where the grafts would go.

Trees of all types grow from the tips of the branches not the base of the trunk. Therefore, the height of the graft will always be at the same height and the height of the main branches will always be the same.

The rootstock, trunk and branches will become much thicker over time.

I was afraid that might be the answer!
It seems strange to have the branches starting so low to the ground even for a bush type tree.
Could further grafts to this tree go onto the existing grafts rather than onto the rootstock?

        As said above.....

The side branches will always remain at the level that they start: in your case, 25-30cm above ground.
The trunk does not elongate but will thicken. Trees grow by adding new shoots onto the ends of branches, or side shoots from branches.

You should be able to graft other varieties into your tree.

Yes but you need to ensure that the ones your graft ontop of the existing grafts are a less vigerous cultivar
