  • Fruit on a Fence ?

We are putting a fence down one side of the allotment made from wooden stakes and chicken wire. It will only be around 2ft high to keep the dog in and not to keep anything else out. I'd like to grow something up it and would like fruit of some kind if poss. It would have to be not very bushy .. gosh I sound really fussy don't I?

    Any ideas?
If at first you don't succeed .. try and not be too surprised.

You often aren't allowed to plant fruit bushes within 3 ft of a boundary fence, because they spread ...

... having said that, I've planted my rasps 3' from the edge, and put chicken wire up on the boundary line.

We aren't allowed fences either, but I got fed up with neighbour's rubbish and weeds tipping onto my patch, so I put the chicken wire up. It keeps my rasps from flopping onto his path too

Raspberries, gooseberries, or currants would be my choice if they are allowed.

Thanks for that. Think I'll just stick with the plain fence then.

Why don't you grow a series of one stepover apple trees around the perimeter? They are essentially a one tiered espalier. You will need to prune them regularly to shape them and keep them in form so you won't have a problem with them spreading too much.
