  • Bought a plum tree

A couple of weeks ago I bought an opal plum tree, its sitting in my breakfast room ( no pot ) as its been too frosty to plant, I need to do something with it but what. Should I plant it in a pot and put in greenhouse till I can plant it in the ground.

The tree needs to go back outside as soon as possible.

If it stays in a mild environment (even a conservatory or greenhouse), it will start to leaf-out - and then:

    1.
The roots will have no water or nutrients that they can draw to fuel the leaves - so the tree will die.

    or

    2.
The mild conditions in the greenhouse will cause the sap to flow and the tree to leaf-out, which, even if the roots have soil and water, the sap flowing again and tender young shoots will make the tree very prone to winter-freeze damage if it goes outside.

Some people will lay the tree on the ground and cover the roots with a few inches of soil to keep the temperature more even and to keep the roots slightly damp.
Perhaps, if the soil is frozen, you could pour some tap water onto some soil to thaw out enough soil to dig up and cover the roots as a temporary measure until you can dig a proper planting hole.
Or perhaps you could use a pile of leaf litter to cover its roots - or perhaps some compost (not pure home-made compost as it's too acid and will burn the roots!).
Or perhaps you have a cool garden shed where the tree can go for a week or two? Just make sure that the roots don't stay dry for more than a few days.

Just a thought but could in be put in a pot outside to be planted out when the soil is easier to manage.

Would need a lot of water to thaw it out at the plot where I want to plant it.
I have some bags of leaves that are rotting down.
I have compost that I could put into a pot and put tree in till I can plant at plot.
I have a celler at home.
I have two sheds one in a sunny posistion one in a frosty position.
If I put it in theshed do I put it in a pot.

Plant the tree in a pot for now and give it a light watering afterwards.
Then it'll be fine until you're ready to plant properly.
Basically: it needs to be kept cool and slightly damp.
