I'd much rather have a fruit tree from Keepers, R.V.Roger or Bernwode on the grounds of better quality (e.g. bigger, healthier, faster to establish).

A friend of mine used Deacons a lot, I tend to use Keepers or Adams apples for trees and rootstock. I've a lot of respect for Bernwode too , but I've not had trees from them.

I bought a family pear tree a few years ago, it hasn't been the fastest thing growing ! Wheras my own is doing well, even though it started far later, and that is based on a Lidl tree

I've placed an order with Adams Apples to arrive in March. What soet of quality are they and do you recommend any specific varieties?

          Kind Regards,

              Everything!

I've ordered apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, cherries, plums and a damson! I got a new allotment this year and I'm very excited! So any recommendations would be gratefully recieved.

                  Thank you FB and Mell,

I have no idea how they'll fare in my wet clay soil but I'm glad they have the best chance if they start off healthy!

I'd suggest protecting peaches and nectarines, prefrably against a south facing wall, but failing that espelier them and cover either with a thick sheet of clear polythene or a peach cage like this Please enable your cookies

I think that is pricy so I'd be inclined to make one. I also think you should use the rainfall to water the tree rather than cart water so angle or pipe the fall on the cover too the roots.

Two reasons to stop peach leaf curl & to stand a chance of ripening fruit !

                      Thanks Mell,

I have bought a polytunnel. A local tree nursery was selling up and I got 1 36m polytunnel for £200! I haven't put it up yet though as I have no running water on site, just a stream and buckets. I would have to think of some way to pipe the water to the tree toots from the roof?

Completely off topic now...if a peach tree gets peach leaf curl once, does it have it forever or if it gets it this year when outdoors, will it be ok next year indoors or will it continue to be afflicted?

Many thanks for answering my silly questions

I haven't done it, but I think it would be possible to collect the water from the poly tunnel roof and use guttering to take it to water butts, this could then be rerouted, probably by a drip feed system to the trees & any excess used for other watering , would save you trouble. If there is a stream close by the water table might be accessible for a well, a friend's hubby built one on his lottie. He uses an electric pump to pump it up.

Re peach leaf curl, I believe the microrganisms remains dormant in the plant, but is activated when the young leaves get splashed with water from rain (or even from watering so you must keep the leaves away from water a bit like gremlins lol) So yes if a tree has had peach leave curl & survives it, it can be fine, but it could die. It it has never had it is could still get it. With it good crops are unlikely though.
