  • fruit tree protection

I planted early last year a lime, lemon and orange trees [ bare two year rooted ] in fairly large pots , and they were growing well. When the winter descended on us i was unable to put in greenhouse and therefore wrapped fleece around them and put a fleece bag over them , however i have lost them all to frost. Because of their nature am i wasting my time trying again. [ even my greenhouse including bubble wrapped inside had frost getting in ]I am told that the lime and lemon still grow slightly in the winter months so where can you put the plants for protection.
Any suggestions would be greatfully received.

Are you sure that they're dead? My Mrs has some Solanum sp (Chilean Potato) and Fuschia. The winter usually looks like it has killed them, but they always come back from the roots, or from thick older stems. Maybe your fruits will get a second chance.

It's always a gamble to grow "exotic" plants.
With the recent very cold winters, you'd probably need to bring the plants indoors - a hallway or spare bedroom.

Given the hassle of exotic plants - and the ready availability of the fruit in supermarkets - I don't bother - although maybe if I had a conservatory to keep them sheltered in winter.......

However, I am all in favour of growing UK-climate-tolerant fruits. Good varieties can give ££'s worth of fruit per year and require only a few minutes of care every few months.

Yes do 't throw them out til at least mid summer, we had a grapefruit tree grown from a pip left outside all the time, a few winters back looked totally dead and then come spring put on a strong new shoot stright up from the base which became the new trunk, so simply cut off the dead stuff and ecouraged the new shoot to grow on.
Admittedly thast was a considerably milder winter than this one. But you never know. Worth waiting anyway.
