I'd like to try my hand at grafting apple trees. I've found a source for the rootstock, but I haven't been able to find a place to get scion wood. Anyone have any ideas?

It depends what you want, if you know someone with an apple variety you like ask if you can take a cutting, I have garfted all sorts of varieties from cuttings from friends trees.
If you want sonmthing specific I believe Brogdale do scions by post see their web site, as do the Marcher apple network.
But the thrifty solution is ask for a cutting, one year vigerous growth of course.

Try your local apple orchard. There's a family owned one close to me that lets me take scion wood.

If thats a no-goer and noone you know have any nice varieties you could try a scion exchange eg http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...nge_43300.html

Thanks for all the help. In case anyone else is interested, Brogdale Farm (National Fruit Collection) does supply scion wood if you email them to ask for it (at £3 a pop).
