  • Managed to get back to Aldi.........

And bought a bare rooted peach tree!

After my abject failure with an apricot tree last year I am determined to at least rear a healthy peach plant. Not bothered whether i get any peaches I would just like a few leaves.........is that too much to ask.

My main mentor, Bob Flowerdew reckons planted in a pot and brought indoors for that critical blooming period is the way to go, so this is what I shall do!

Haven't even taken the p[ackaging off it yet, just got it soaking in a bucket in the greenhouse. I think its a red peach which is purportedly self fertile, but shall read the full bumph at planting time.

I will put it in a large container, but not THAT large that I can't lift it inside for the winter period.

If the Victorians could manage to grow peaches......so can I!

Get your rabbit's tail at the ready, Snadge - that's what they used to use to pollinate the peach trees. I always said that you needed to make a helpful buzzing noise at the same time, to encourage the process along!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Last year was Cox and Bramley's turn..........good crops of large apples off both of these Aldi originated varieties and don't they taste great!

When did you ever see a bunny with a fuffy foot!

A rabbits foot is supposed to be lucky, but a tail or scut is used for pollination! (or a wad of cotton wool or baby bud does just the same thing)

I'm a bit frustrated that Aldi don't tell you what rootstock is involved and they are not contactable by email either

edit: I had a look instore, and the labels all say final height is *about* 20ft, so that's no good

My small peach tree is outside ( used to be in the greenhouse in the UK)- last year it got peach curl from the rain and I managed to catch it in time by copper sulphating it.
....Just something for you to watch out for

Good luck with yours- tis lovely to be able to pick your own peaches!!

i got the fantasia nectarine trees from aldi in 2009 , they were covered in fruit last year, most of it ok some damaged by the leaf curl as i didnt keep them inside over the winter ( as i have always done with the peaches ), they are gowing in morisions flower buckets but should be in something a bit bigger , my perigrine peaches are in 12 inch pots and are fine with no leaf curl moving inside and outside to keep the leaf curl away

a few years ago i got a good book on how the victorians did pot grown fruit trees such as peaches, `The culture of fruit trees in pots` by josh brace , its quite good as its all about growing small bush trees in pots

Its back again to aldi this thursday, citrus plants, mushroom kits etc

Bagged one of the peach trees on Sunday along with 3 apple trees, will be restricting the fruit trees by growing as cordons. Don't know if it will work as I suspect the rootstock may be a bit to vigorous. The peach will be grown it a big pot.
