  • Raspberry advice please?!

    Hi

    Just looking at my raspsberries which have been declining in growth and vigour these last few years ....time has come for action!

    I think I'm going to make a new rasp bed with some of the better canes;
    question is are the better ones nearer the edge (mine are in a wide row, about 1 mt, they were like this when I took on the lottie) and do I still need to cut these down as they are autumn fruiting? They are starting to bud up now.

    Not very knowledgable with fruit, any advice gratefully received!

    The outer ones should be the younger runners, so I'd go for them. Dig them up, plant up your bed, and then cut off the old canes when you have placed them. Give them something good as a mulch.
    Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      Would you still cut down the canes if they are budding- the outer plants have quite short canes, a bit spindly - do you think they would they re-grow if I cut them down?

        Well they do say with Autumn fruiting to cut them all down to ground level once they have fruited. I would transplant and wait and see in your case - otherwise you may not get any rasps this year! They do fruit on old wood - just not as well, as you have already indicated. Whatever you do - feed well.
