  • Old raspberries on new allotment plot

My LO's nursery has a new allotment. There are some canes along the western edge, and they look like raspberries to me. They are approx. 1 to 1.2m tall, a rusy brown colour, fine spines at the bottom of the canes but nothing higher than around 20cm up the stem.

Obviously I have no idea whether these are autumn, summer or a mix of both. Should I cut them down? Leave them alone this year? Prune them by a third of their length? Ideally I'd like the kids to be able to harvest at least some rasps this year.

    Thanks!

I'd leave them or prune every second one to 1/3 of it's height then you are hedging your bets.....if there is no sign of any fruits having been on them from last year then they may be next year's canes....but usually the new canes for this year are greener [but this might not be the case on older varieties]....if you prune half then even if they are winter ones you should get some fruit.
