  • Do I cut back new Autumn Bliss raspberry canes?

    Hello

I'm new here - I've done a quick search on this forum and couldn't find an answer so please accept my apologies if this question is duplicated elsewhere!

I bought 10 Autumn Bliss raspberry canes about 3 weeks ago and potted them up in large deep tubs of John Innes No.3. The canes / twigs are about 10" tall... I have read that autumn fruiting rasps need to be cut back to ground level in winter... so I'm a bit confused about what to do since they are new!
When I planted them a couple had a some pale shoots from below soil level but as yet I haven't noticed any growth on the 'canes'.

    What do you think?

    Thanks in advance everyone!

I've got the same - I'm going to leave the cane as a marker and take out the old cane when the other shoots have established well. Unless the cane decides to send out a fruiting spur in which case I'll leave it and take it out in the autumn.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Raspberries are temperamental things that don't always transplant well.

I would leave them untouched for this year, but begin normal pruning regime in the autumn. The less interference in the first growing season the better.
Keep them well-fed (compost mulch and nitrogen-rich fertiliser) and well-watered. Raspberries like a fertile and constantly moist (but not waterlogged) soil.

They should sprout new shoots from the ground, although older canes will often re-grow, or grow side shoots. The purpose of removing older canes is because they become less productive with age. Productivity is not the main concern at the moment; getting them established is the top priority.

        Thanks for your help everyone.
I had to go back to Hillier's GC for some compost so I asked the fruit lady her opinion too, and she also said to leave until after autumn 2011.
I chuffing love raspberries, I cannot wait!
