  • Grape varieties for eating

    Hi there

I have done a search and couldn't find the answer to this, so hope it's not a question people have to answer too often

I have a new fence up with trellis on it and was thinking of growing grape vines on it. It gets a fair amount of sun but it is not south-facing. Do you think it is possible to get a good crop of grapes (south of England)?

Also has anyone else out there grown grapes for eating in this part of the country, do you know good varieties?

Thanks for any advice you have, gratefully received......

I had a vine given a couple of year ago but it didn't survive the winter. If you have a look on this link I'm sure you'll find something that will fit what you looking for.

There is a vineyard at my allotment in north west London. It is on a south facing hillside. I think it occupies a double plot. I understand it is not successful every year (I have only been there for two years) but when it does deliver produces enough fruit to make several hundred bottles of wine. There are three varieties of grape. I understand from the holder that spraying against mildew is the make or break task, and he gets low or insignificant harvest when he does not attend to this expeditiously and thoroughly.
