  • Peach tree propagation

    Hello everyone,

I've recently discovered a peach tree growing in a small patch of overgrown land to the side of my allotment and wondered if i could propagate from it?

Does anyone have any experience in growing peach trees from cuttings? if so would they share them with the rest of us?

    Thanks.

    Hi Nudger,

The trouble with most fruit trees is the vigour of them, they are either very vigourous or more like me thats why they are grafted.

I guess you could try and grow from a cutting but I don't know how sucessfull it would be.

Also peaches & nectarines really do best either under cover (greenhous or polytunnel) or fan trained upa gainst a sunny south facing wall. I know there are some vairieteis that are supposed to be OK for this country but our weather is too unpredicatable to give good results.

Could you not "re-patriate" it to your plot?

      Hi Nick,

I'm affraid its a tad too large for that sort of repatriation, it's been there for quite a few years by the look of it. I only discovered it after a couple of workmen cleared the pathway next to the lottie with a chainsaw.... yes it was that overgrown with bramble.

Nevermind, i'll keep trying and see if i get any joy. I'll be sure to let everyone know if i do.

We bought a pixie Victoria plum ( which died! )- I wonder if you can graft a peach onto a plum- reckon you can! ( you might end up with necterines!!!)

Have you actually seen it fruit Nudger? It might be worth watching its performance this season. If it's a big tree and growing without the protection of a wall, and still manages to produce a good crop - then start taking cuttings! You can call it Nudger's Delight or something. It may not turn out to be worth propagating though, but the idea of a free tree is very tempting. Watching brief I reckon.

I've not seen it fruit as yet Flummery. I'm certainly going to keep a close eye on its performance over the coming months Nudgers Delight... hehehe what fantastic idea! i'm not likely to get my name up in lights as it were but on a peach tree.....

As with most of these types of fruit trees, half the battle is getting a nice tasty fruit and lots of it, more luck than judgement by all accounts.

Anyway i'll be sure to keep you all posted.
